Summary
Develops and maintains integrated web sites of unusual complexity, broad scope, and key importance to a major division or principal operating component of the University. Plans functionality and usability standards, formulates design strategies, and participates in the strategic planning of web site goals and objectives. Creates or coordinates the creation of written and graphic content, and logic structure of the sites, in collaboration with a variety of internal and external constituencies at all levels of the organization. Guides, trains, and coordinates the activities of lower level web designers and/or technical staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develops and maintains integrated plans for the organization's internet presence, based on management goals and priorities; participates in the establishment of internet policies, directions, and standards.
Participates in the overall design structuring of the web sites; creates enhancements and modifications, and organizes and maintains the sites.
Develops and implements plans to obtain and maintain a high level of functionality, usability, and design structure for the web sites.
Assesses new standards, technologies and trends, and formulates strategies and plans for future enhancement of web sites.
Ensures that web sites are accessible from a variety of different environments.
Produces a consistent visual image on the web sites including maintenance of templates and image archives.
Oversees, executes, and/or coordinates web programming, using a variety of authoring languages, creation and implementation of image links, uploading of pages to the web site, and updating of information on pages and databases.
Ensures that images are delivered to the viewer at sufficiently high speed and quality.
Researches, develops, and coordinates the creation of comprehensive editorial and graphic layouts for new sections and/or features on the sites.
May lead and/or guide the work of other staff or students engaged in similar functions.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Advanced knowledge and understanding of web-based graphic design and layout.
Web planning and organizing skills.
Ability to apply web design principles and techniques to the creation and enhancement of integrated, complex web sites.
Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
Knowledge of a comprehensive range of web programming software and authoring languages.
Research and analytical skills.
Skill in computer graphics and layout.
Ability to evaluate new and evolving website technologies.
Knowledge and understanding of internet operations and functionality, and of a wide range of internet programming and design tools.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) participating in the establishment of internet policies, directions, and standards; b) overseeing web programming using a variety of authoring languages; and c) participating in the design structuring of the sites.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
No or very limited physical effort required.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
