Summary

Under indirect supervision, provides specialized, professional level support in areas of advanced complexity such as system and/or network, hardware and software tools, including installation, configuration, maintenance and support of these systems and/or networks. Requires advanced knowledge of systems, security, or network analysis. Makes recommendations for large, medium, and small-scale IT purchases or solutions. Provides technical and functional leadership to users/departments in the planning and implementations of large or complicated applications, systems or networks projects. May supervise or provide functional direction to assigned staff and/or student employees.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Uses independent judgement to consult with users, other university departments, external organizations and/or agencies to collect information/gather requirements for existing or proposed network, security and computing devices, server systems, multiuser applications, and/or databases including capacity planning, security, data safety and integrity, disaster recovery, and upgrade planning. Recommends designs, provides cost analyses, plans projects and coordinates tasks for the installation/maintance of networks or systems for short-, medium-, and long-range strategic projects.
  2. Develops and provides individual and/or group instruction and/or training on operating systems, relational databases, security and privacy and other applications; assists users in maximizing use of networks and computing systems.
  3. Interprets the unit's strategic goals and recommends solutions for multiple large scale network, hardware, software or system security projects and in support of those goals.
  4. Plans and implements authorized procedures and alternative guidelines for system administration and triage; escalates technical issues as appropriate.
  5. Oversees, maintains and inputs applicable records such as, but not limited to, hardware and software inventories, site and/or server licensing, and user access and security. Researches and recommends hardware and software development, purchase, implementation and use.
  6. Prepares or may lead others in the preparation of detailed flow charts and diagrams outlining systems, applications, or network capabilities and processes; documents projects and may write user instructions.
  7. Participates, or may serve as lead, in the investigation, planning, implementation, testing and debuging of network or systems hardware components and applications.
  8. Plans and implements advanced defense-in-depth system security, including building firewalls, applying cryptography to network applications, managing host security, file permissions, and file system integrity, managing and implementing roles, and adding and deleting users according to business rules.
  9. Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues of advanced complexity and provides on-call support for network, hardware, software and/or system security services including user access and computer configuration.
  10. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  11. Evaluates and tests new or modified software programs and software development procedures used to verify that programs function according to user requirements and conform to established guidelines and best practices.
  12. May supervise or provide functional direction to assigned staff and/or student employees.
  13. May be responsible for administration and oversight of medium to large scale technology projects.
  14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of university policy, federal and state regulations as they apply to security, privacy, intellectual property and information system management.
  • Advanced knowledge of systems integration and automation techniques and tools.
  • Demonstrated skills in the design, development, implementation and testing of complex integrated network, hardware, software and system security solutions to organizational requirements.
  • Skilled in preparing budgetary evaluations and proposals regarding current and/or future hardware and software capabilities/requirements that follow university procurement guidelines and inventory keeping methods.
  • Problem analysis and resolution skills as applied to the installation, maintenance, modification and troubleshooting of network, hardware, software and system security services.
  • Ability to administer a broad range of network, hardware, software, system security tools and methods.
  • Ability to communicate and/or develop technical documentation for capacity planning, training, service security architecture, software/hardware use, or as required by project deliverables.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff and/or lead cross-functional teams.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position Requires: a) Provision of advanced technical assistance and support to large scale initiatives as an individual or part of a team; b) Development and implementation of procedures; c)Analysis, evaluation and resolution of complex problems; d) Research and recommendation of large-scale hardware and software development, purchase, and use; and e) Provision of technical guidance to other IT staff.

Conditions of Employment

  • Specialty licensure/certification may be required, as specified by the department.
  • Successful candidate may be subject to a criminal background check prior to starting work.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical effort. May require occasional lifting, handling, pushing, or moving objects up to 50 lbs. Constant standing/walking.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
