Summary

Under direct supervision, provides basic professional level support in routine to moderately complex areas such as system and/or network, hardware and software tools, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and support of these systems and/or networks. Requires fundamental knowledge of systems, security or network analysis. Researches and may provide input regarding small to medium scale IT purchases or solutions. Serves as technical or functional resource to users/departments in the planning and implementations of small-scale applications, systems or networks projects. May supervise or provide functional direction to support staff and/or student employees.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Uses discretionary judgement within known parameters to coordinate with users and/or other university departments to collect information/gather requirements for existing or proposed network, security and computing devices, server systems, multiuser applications, and/or databases including capacity planning, security, data safety and integrity, disaster recovery, and upgrade planning.
  2. Gathers or assists with the collection of information, design and cost analysis, performs support tasks for the installation/maintance of networks or systems for various projects.
  3. Assists in the development of and provides individual and/or group instruction and/or training on operating systems, relational databases, security and privacy, and other applications; assists users in maximizing use of networks and computing systems; may supervise or provide functional direction to support staff and/or student employees.
  4. Investigates solutions for multiple small to large scale network, hardware, software or system security projects in support the unit's operational goals. Follows authorized procedures or alternatives and seeks assistance when guidelines are inadequate, significant deviations are proposed, or when unanticipated problems arise.
  5. May record and maintain hardware and software inventories, site and/or server licensing, and user access and security; may assist in the research and recommendation of hardware and software development, purchase, implementation and use.
  6. Provides assistance or may prepare detailed flow charts and diagrams outlining systems, applications, or network capabilities and processes; documents projects and may write user instructions.
  7. Assists in the investigation, planning, implementation, testing, and debugging network or systems hardware components and applications.
  8. Implements defense in-depth system security, including building firewalls, applying cryptography to network applications, managing host security, file permissions, and file system integrity, managing and implementing roles, and adding and deleting users according to business rules.
  9. Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues of routine complexity and provides on-call support for network, hardware, software and/or system security services including user access and computer configuration.
  10. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  11. May evaluate and test new or modified software programs and software development procedures used to verify that programs function according to user requirements and conform to established guidelines and best practices.
  12. May be responsible for coordination and oversight of small scale technology projects.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Basic knowledge of university policy, federal and state regulations as they apply to security, privacy, intellectual property and information system management.
  • Basic knowledge of systems integration and automation techniques and tools.
  • Knowledge of relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  • Demonstrated skills in the design, development, implementation and testing of complex integrated network, hardware, software and system security solutions to organizational requirements.
  • Problem analysis and resolution skills as applied to the installation, maintenance, modification and troubleshooting of network, hardware, software and system security services.
  • Ability to administer a broad range of network, hardware, software, system security tools and methods.
  • Ability to communicate and/or develop technical documentation for capacity planning, training, service security architecture, software/hardware use, or as required by project deliverables.
  • Ability to lead and train technical support staff/students.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position Requires: a) Provision of basic technical assistance and support to small scale initiatives as an individual or to large scale initiatives as part of a team; b) Use of prescribed procedures; c) Analysis, evaluation and resolution of routine problems; and d) Research and/or recommendation of small-scale hardware and software development, purchase, and use.

Conditions of Employment

  • Specialty licensure/certification may be required, as specified by the department.
  • Successful candidate may be subject to a criminal background check prior to starting work.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical effort. May require occasional lifting, handling, pushing, or moving objects up to 50 lbs. Constant standing/walking.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
