Summary
Prepares legal research, gives legal advice, develops administrative regulations, provides legal, policy, and analysis of issues, administers contracts, develops public educational programs, and participates in preparation of grant proposals. May represent the University or its officials in various proceedings.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides analysis of legal, policy, and environmental issues.
Conducts and oversees research into a variety of legal issues in field of expertise.
Writes, edits, and finalizes reports, opinions, correspondence, articles, and other documents; advises university officials about legal issues in specialty areas.
Administers contracts with funding agencies.
Coordinates multi-agency teams to study and/or evaluate a variety of issues and provide services as needed.
Prepares grant and contract proposals, and other documents, as needed.
May supervise non-professional staff and/or student employees.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
J.D. or LL.B; no previous experience required.
Certification/Licensure
Member of NM State Bar, or member of State Bar of another state or District of Columbia and in possession of a Public Employee Limited License issued by the NM Supreme Court.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Knowledge of contract documents and specifications.
Ability to conduct complex legal research.
Ability to create, compose and edit legal opinions and other written materials.
Knowledge of contracts and grants preparation and management.
Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Position requires: a) Providing research and analysis of legal, policy and environmental issues; b) writing opinions, correspondence, articles, and other legal documentation; c) preparing grant and contract proposals, and administering contracts with funding agencies; d) providing University officials information regarding legal issues; and e) Membership in a State Bar (NM membership required within 12 months of date of hire).
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
No or very limited physical effort required.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
