Summary

Leads, directs, and oversees all Athletics business and fiscal affairs as well as strategic planning for the department. Serves as a member of the executive leadership team and provides leadership in various capacities to support the overall success of the Athletics Department. Requires significant knowledge of all NCAA and Mountain West Conference (MWC) rules and regulations. Reports directly to the Vice President and Director of Athletics. Serves as the designated sport administrator for assigned athletic programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Manages and coordinates the business operations of the Athletics Department, to include financial planning, future requirements, and the establishment and management of financial control systems.
  2. Liaises for the department on all fiscal matters. Reviews accounting statements to ensure all transactions charged to Athletics are accurate and within approved budgets.
  3. Ensures overall budget compliance for the enterprise; directs expense and revenue forecasting and control, cash management, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
  4. Works with intra- and inter-departmental stakeholders to ensure all fiscal and budgetary matters within the Athletics Department comply with NCAA, MWC, and UNM rules and regulations as well as all state and federal regulations.
  5. Works in collaboration with the UNM Lobo Club and its designated business operations manager to monitor the Lobo Scholarship Fund, Sport Enhancement Funds, and other initiative-based fundraising efforts.
  6. Serves as primary liaison with designated UNM departments, including Human Resources, IT, Financial Services Division, Procurement, and others, to ensure effective communication and collaboration. Serves as the liaison for both internal and external audits.
  7. Oversees the Supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  8. Provides management and oversight over the Department of Athletics name, image, and likeness (NIL) efforts, including the generation of agreements in conjunction with University Counsel. Works with the office of the University Treasurer to process payments and ensure fiscal compliance.
  9. Recommends and participates in the development of organizational policies and procedures; may serve on strategic planning and policy-making committees.
  10. Advises units on improvement of current fiscal procedures, implementation of new fiscal policies, and training of accounting and administrative personnel.
  11. Participates in the development of annual operating budgets and provides fiscal direction to the unit.
  12. Assists with the administration of intercollegiate game contracts.
  13. Participates in short-and long-range organizational and operational planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals.
  14. Serves as sports coordinator for one or more NCAA Division I team sports, to include oversight of sport budget(s), personnel management, NCAA/MWC compliance, and team athletic/academic performance.
  15. Ensures compliance with all laws, policies, rules, and regulations set forth by the Board of Regents, University, NCAA, Conference, state and federal laws, and other governing bodies/agencies.
  16. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations, and university financial policies and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare financial reports.
  • Knowledge and understanding of business management principles and practices.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Strategic planning skills.
  • Knowledge of software to quantify and illustrate complex financial reports, comparisons, impacts, and/or projections.
  • Knowledge of computerized information systems used in financial and/or accounting applications.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and conceptualize long-term information systems needs on an organizational basis.
