Summary

Under limited supervision, leads the design, development, implementation, and optimization of complex business intelligence and analytics solutions supporting strategic and operational initiatives across the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC). Serves as a functional and technical expert for assigned reporting and analytical areas, providing consultation on data utilization, reporting strategies, and analytical approaches. Leads complex projects and problem resolution, establishes reporting best practices, and provides technical guidance and mentoring to other analysts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Leads the design, development, implementation, and optimization of complex reports, dashboards, scorecards, data models, visualizations, and analytical solutions using enterprise BI platforms and data warehouse resources.
  2. Partners with leadership, functional stakeholders, and technical teams to evaluate complex business requirements and develop scalable reporting and analytical solutions.
  3. Develops complex SQL queries and data models to extract, integrate, transform, validate, and analyze data across multiple enterprise systems.
  4. Serves as a subject matter expert for assigned reporting and analytical domains, providing consultation on reporting strategies, data utilization, business definitions, and analytical approaches.
  5. Leads advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis of complex reporting, data quality, integration, and BI system issues; recommends and implements appropriate solutions.
  6. Establishes and promotes reporting, documentation, data quality, and BI development standards and best practices consistent with institutional requirements.
  7. Provides expertise related to data governance, metadata, data lineage, stewardship, security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
  8. Leads technical aspects and workstreams of BI and analytics projects, including solution design, testing, deployment, implementation, and ongoing support.
  9. Evaluates and recommends enhancements to reporting architecture, processes, tools, and technologies to improve performance, scalability, accessibility, and maintainability.
  10. Develops advanced user and technical documentation and provides training, consultation, and knowledge transfer to business users and technical staff.
  11. Mentors Business Intelligence Analysts by providing technical guidance, coaching, and assistance with complex analytical and reporting work; does not exercise formal supervisory authority.
  12. Leads continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reporting efficiency, data consistency, accessibility, automation, and analytical capabilities.
  13. Researches and evaluates emerging BI technologies, reporting methodologies, and analytical practices and recommends appropriate applications within HSC.
  14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Advanced knowledge of business intelligence concepts, enterprise reporting methodologies, and analytical practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL, relational databases, enterprise data warehouse concepts, data models, and reporting technologies.
  • Advanced knowledge of data governance, stewardship, data quality, metadata management, security, and privacy principles.
  • Ability to independently analyze complex and non-routine business problems and develop scalable analytical and reporting solutions.
  • Ability to interpret complex or ambiguous business requirements and translate them into effective BI solutions.
  • Ability to perform advanced troubleshooting and resolve complex reporting, analytical, and data quality issues.
  • Ability to establish reporting standards and promote BI development and documentation best practices.
  • Ability to lead technical projects and workstreams and coordinate activities across functional and technical teams.
  • Ability to communicate complex analytical findings and technical concepts to executive, technical, and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to mentor analysts and provide technical leadership without formal supervisory responsibility.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, project management, consultation, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) advanced professional-level business intelligence and analytical work supporting HSC systems and functions; b) independent development of complex BI, reporting, data modeling, and analytical solutions; c) advanced SQL development, troubleshooting, and analysis across multiple enterprise data sources; d) functional and technical expertise within assigned reporting domains; e) leadership of technical BI projects and workstreams; f) establishment and promotion of reporting standards and best practices; g) advanced consultation with leadership, business stakeholders, and technical teams; and h) technical guidance and mentoring of other analysts without formal supervisory responsibility.
