Summary

Under the direction of the University Administrative Hearing Officer, serves students, faculty, and/or staff engaged as respondents or complainants in administrative civil rights proceedings. Advises participants of policies and procedures and accompanies participants to meetings, interviews, and appeals. Conducts cross-examinations of parties and witnesses in administrative hearings.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides support, guidance, and information to students, faculty, or staff who are complainants or respondents in civil rights proceedings.
  2. Accompanies participants to meetings, interviews, administrative procedures, appeals, and/or other related proceedings.
  3. Provides guidance to the participant at the hearing phase of the proceeding; conducts the cross-examination of parties and witnesses during the live administrative hearing.
  4. Assists participants in understanding the relevant University policies and in navigating the administrative process.
  5. Helps prepare the participant for proceedings, to include advising on the potential impact of the various choices and outcomes.
  6. Works collaboratively with various campus departments and officials to ensure due process, including the Office of the University Counsel, Office of Equal Opportunity, and the University's Title IX Coordinator.
  7. Ensures compliance with all applicable University, State, and Federal laws and regulations.
  8. Maintains strict confidentiality of clients and records.
  9. May connect the participant with resources during the administrative process.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a directly related field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of legal documentation procedures and requirements.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and university compliance laws, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to a new and changing regulatory environment.
  • Knowledge of programs/services available to university constituents.
  • Advanced analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills and the ability to effectively summarize and present information.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with time sensitive deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to operate calmly and effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Skilled in facilitating problem solving with individuals regarding personal, professional and/or academic priorities.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours as needed.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment with frequent work outside the office environment within the local area, as needed.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
