Summary

Under general supervision, develops, implements, and manages the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for exterior areas of the campus, including landscape, pest and undesirable plant management control.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develops and implements an integrated pest management program for exterior areas of the institution using a composite of techniques to include physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological methods.
2. Ensures compliance with all application policies, procedures, laws, and regulations; manages database of information to ensure compliance with all applicable State, Federal, and Department of Homeland Security requirements.
3. Makes accurate pest identification and recommends appropriate treatments using IPM principles.
4. Identifies maintenance and procedural modifications which will decrease exterior pest incidence.
5. Maintains arthropod inventory and specimen collection.
6. Maintains work area, storage facilities personal protective and application equipment in a safe and operable manner.
7. Performs all necessary and appropriate mixing, loading, application and disposal of chemicals.
8. Maintain and perform chemical inventories.
9. May assist with interior pest management as needed.
10. Performs snow removal duties, as required.
11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

• High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: State of New Mexico 3A Pesticide License in Ornamental and Turf Pest Control: Insecticides. State of New Mexico 3B Pesticide License in Ornamental and Turf Pest Control: Herbicides.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
• Knowledge of integrated pest management practices.
• Records maintenance skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
• Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
• Ability to read and understand chemical labels.
• Knowledge of fertilizer and/or pesticide applications.
• Knowledge in the use and care of all necessary personal protective equipment.
• Knowledge of biological specimen preservation techniques.
• Knowledge of arthropod taxonomy.
• Knowledge of horticultural practices, plant taxonomy, and insect/disease control.
• Ability to develop and maintain record-keeping systems and procedures.
• Knowledge of applicable State, Federal, and Homeland Security laws, regulations, methods, and techniques.

Conditions of Employment

• Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
• Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
• Must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire the following New Mexico Pesticide License categories: Category 5, 6, 7A, 7B, and 8.
• Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
• Extensive physical activity. Requires handling of objects up to 50 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than six (6) hours per day.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
