Summary

Coordinates custodial functions of a specified University unit or component, ensuring quality of work and timely completion of tasks. Provides day-to-day leadership and guidance to lower level custodial staff engaged in similar activities. Delegates work assignments, trains personnel, assists with ordering supplies and may supervise personnel, where appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates the work of other staff members as appropriate to the position; monitoring work assignments, setting schedules, and providing on-going training.
  2. Inspects work areas to ensure consistency and quality of work and adherence to established procedures, safety regulations, and infection control standards.
  3. Ensures customer requests are fulfilled in a timely manner; may assist with project planning and coordination.
  4. Assists with purchasing materials, supplies, and equipment; maintains applicable inventories.
  5. Trains employees on cleaning and equipment techniques, methods and procedures.
  6. Maintains open and cooperative communication with external vendors and suppliers.
  7. Maintains records of work performed.
  8. Ensures adherence to established University and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.
  9. May perform general maintenance, custodial and trash removal tasks.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Less than high school; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.
  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and schedules.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Knowledge of custodial practices, machinery and related equipment.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record work, safety and infection control standards.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to lead and train staff and/or students.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position Requires: a) Coordination of custodial operations for a University unit or component; b) day-to-day leadership and guidance to lower level staff, which may include supervision; c) work with outside vendors and suppliers; and d) responsibility for maintaining inventory levels and purchasing materials as necessary.

Conditions of Employment

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • A valid New Mexico driver's license will be required if a motor vehicle must be operated on the job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 pounds (or greater mass that require mechanical assistance). Standing or walking may occur up to 40% of time.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
