The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary

Under indirect supervision, provides wide range of trauma consultation, including crisis intervention, clinical evaluation, and assessment to individuals and families in acute stages of grief. Develops, facilitates, and mentors groups related to traumatic death, as appropriate. Designs and delivers education programs in grief theory and intervention associated with traumatic death to students and/or to community constituencies. Plans and oversees program initiatives and participates in program development and administration, and/or in research activities, as appropriate. May work in one or more of a variety of settings, such as community outreach, home setting, or hospital environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs crisis interventions, evaluations, assessments, consultations, and/or referrals, either on an individual basis or as a member of an interdisciplinary team, in accordance with program protocols and federal, state, and agency regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  2. Plans, schedules, and coordinates clinical activities and/or collaborates with other professionals, staff, and external agencies to ensure that clinical activities and issues are handled in a manner consistent with the specified program.
  3. Consults with individual patients, families, and service providers, in a range of settings, to develop recommendations for treatment programs and techniques, to interpret evaluation results, and/or to coordinate the provision of care and treatment.
  4. Develops, facilitates, and mentors groups in relation to specific causes of sudden death.
  5. Recruits, trains, mentors, and coordinates the activities of volunteers for grief and other support services to individuals and families located in communities statewide.
  6. Plans, designs, and leads and/or participates in education, training, and outreach activities, to include program development and presentation of lectures and/or workshops.
  7. As appropriate to position objectives, serves as project leader in the development and implementation of special programs, to include grant preparation, budgeting, program administration and/or research.
  8. Prepares or participates in the writing and preparation of reports, articles, and/or grants and proposals.
  9. May travel extensively, as required, throughout the state to provide services to families, groups, and/or volunteers, as appropriate to the focus and objectives of the specified program;.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, or directly related behavioral health field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of grief and loss theory, and responses to trauma.
  • Skill in the planning and development of urban and rural outreach programs and services.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical organization structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to provide professional leadership and guidance to professionals, paraprofessionals, and/or lay persons in area of expertise.
  • Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client.
  • Ability to evaluate, assess, and plan for continued care of traumatized individuals.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Ability to recruit, train, supervise, and motivate volunteers within area of specialty.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and standards for the delivery of therapeutic crisis intervention.
  • Ability to travel on occasion outside the metropolitan area.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Ability to work with individuals in acute grief and with those experiencing post-traumatic stress reactions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Conditions of Employment

  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Discipline-specific licensure/certification is a requirement for positions in this classification.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Will work in a death environment with occasional noxious odors.
  • Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
