Summary

Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on utility plant equipment and systems to promote safe and efficient operation of high-pressure steam boilers, refrigeration units, potable water systems, electricity production systems, and associated equipment. Works occasional 16-hour shifts as scheduled or otherwise required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Examines machinery or mechanical equipment; identifies reasons for malfunction and completes repairs and/or maintenance.
  2. Inspects parts for any changes in dimensions utilizing rules, calipers, micrometers, or other appropriate tools.
  3. Installs, repairs, and replaces piping and fittings for oil, natural gas, water, steam, compressed air, heating and plumbing lines, and systems for equipment such as gas and steam turbines, air and natural gas compressors, pumps, chillers and boilers.
  4. Uses hand tools, power tools, and testing instruments to repair and maintain rotating and stationary machinery and equipment.
  5. Cleans plant facilities, equipment, and work areas as required.
  6. Installs new equipment and systems and repairs and maintains current equipment and systems as needed.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  8. Follows established Federal, State, and University safety and environmental policies and procedures, and promotes adherence to these policies and procedures in the workplace.
  9. Participates in development and uses a computerized maintenance management system.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Possession of at least one of the following New Mexico Journeyman's licenses/certifications; Plumbing (JP), Pipe Fitter (JPF), Gas (JG), Refrigeration (JR) or Plumber/Gas (JPG).
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to physically enter boiler steam and water drums, boiler fireboxes and exhaust stacks, deaerating feedwater tanks, and other tight spaces.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to work in elevated locations up to 75 feet.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to accurately use rules, calipers, micrometers, and other related measuring tools.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of inspecting and cleaning utility plant equipment.
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance management principles as related to supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Ability to perform inspections and make necessary adjustments to conform to job specifications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Inspecting parts and machinery or mechanical equipment, completing major repairs and/or maintenance; b) installing, repairing and replacing equipment, piping and fittings for various systems; c) installing new equipment and systems.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • Must have Basic First Aid and Adult CPR/AED Certificates or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Extensive physical effort. Requires stair climbing; heavy lifting, handling, pushing or moving objects up to 50 lbs (or greater with the use of mechanical assistance). Constant standing/walking.
  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
