Summary

Receives, sorts, and delivers US Postal Service and campus mail. Prepares and processes First Class, Priority, Standard (Bulk), parcels, and accountable US mail. Operates and maintains computerized postage metering and weighing equipment. Works some evenings and/or weekends, as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Receives directly and/or transports US mail from the US Postal Service main processing facility, on a time-sensitive daily schedule.
  2. Collects, sorts, processes, and delivers incoming US mail, campus mail, parcels, and accountable US mail from and to departments and delivery points on Main and South Campuses, the Health Sciences Center, and off-campus locations throughout the City of Albuquerque.
  3. Prepares, weighs, and scans chargeback bar codes, and meters appropriate classes of outgoing US mail to both domestic and international destinations, in accordance with US Postal Service regulations and the Domestic Mail Manual.
  4. Prepares US mail for Standard (Bulk) mail processing; may assist with print-to-mail processing on mail production equipment.
  5. Provides direct customer assistance as required during deliveries; furnishes customers with information regarding University postal policy, USPS regulations, and generally accepted mailing standards.
  6. Collects data on sorting and delivery volume for benchmarking analysis.
  7. Ensures security of metering equipment in compliance with USPS regulations and department security requirements; ensures the security and confidentiality of all University, incoming, outgoing, and campus mail.
  8. Ensures proper care in the use of equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety.
  9. Transports large University checks to Main US Postal Service facility, for deposit to University postage account; internally transports and processes University checks.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Basic computer operating skills.
  • Knowledge of United States Post Office regulations.
  • Knowledge of Standard (Bulk) processes and procedures.
  • Ability to safely operate a range of motor transport vehicles to transport mail.
  • Ability to read, sort, check, count, and verify numbers.
  • Ability to accurately sort and process mail, parcels, and accountable mail.
  • Ability to operate and maintain electronic metering equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow security and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal or written instructions.
  • Ability to follow schedules and meet deadlines.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must be able to work evening and/or weekend overtime as required.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; stair climbing, heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 100 pounds for extended periods of time.
  • Work involves frequent repetitive motion including but not limited to bending, twisting, and repetitive hand/wrist motion.
  • Work may, on occasion, involve exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Work is normally performed in a warehouse/loading dock setting with deliveries to offices or laboratories.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
