The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary

Performs varied, routine technical tasks associated with the execution of health sciences laboratory, clinical, and/or field research protocol. Collects, processes, and coordinates a range of data, samples, and/or specimens, under established protocol regarding method, process, and technique. Performs varied laboratory/clinical tests, field interviews, and/or other research procedures. Performs preliminary data manipulation and assists in the execution of standard research protocol, as instructed. May participate in routine data analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs routine and standardized data verification, data manipulation, data reduction, and basic analysis, using specialized statistical and scientific software.
  2. Collects, logs, and compiles research data, samples, solutions, materials, and/or media in strict accordance to pre-established protocol and procedural parameters.
  3. Sets up, operates, and maintains a variety of standard laboratory, clinical, field research, or test instrumentation, as required for the individual research project.
  4. Monitors, stocks, and procures research equipment and supplies inventories, as appropriate.
  5. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  6. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of directly related student practicum or equivalent experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Ability to collect and process research data and accurately record findings.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of scientific research methodology.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data.
  • Working knowledge of research techniques, instrumentation, and/or equipment, as specified in the research study.
  • Ability to utilize statistical computer software.
  • Knowledge of data management techniques.

Conditions of Employment

  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work may, on occasion, involve exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. May require physical effort including lifting up to 25 pounds and some extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Work may on occasion involve exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that may require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
