Summary

Provides professional statistical support to one or more research studies in the physical, life, and/or socioeconomic sciences, to include data collection, assistance in the establishment of data collection instruments and protocol, data analysis/manipulation and management, computer systems/applications programming and analysis, and reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans and documents computer data file structure; develops, programs, manages, and maintains complex statistical databases; performs or supervises data entry.
  2. Selects data samples, prepares questionnaires and surveys, and conducts logic checks to maintain data quality.
  3. Uses existing statistical software and a variety of established statistical methods to gather, analyze, and interpret research data to derive useful information for research studies.
  4. Formats data, and develops and prepares reports, charts, tables, and other related documents and graphics.
  5. Participates with other statisticians in the development of statistical methodology, study design, and data analysis.
  6. Assists in project planning and management with clients and other staff members.
  7. May supervise data entry personnel and/or students on specific, project-related tasks.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to plan, create, program and manage complex statistical computer databases.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply a range of standard statistical techniques in support of scientific research studies and/or experiments.
  • Ability to process computer data and to format and generate reports.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data.
  • Knowledge of programming logic and codes.
  • Knowledge of statistical sampling and survey methodology.
  • Skills in the use of database management, word processing, spreadsheet, and/or presentation software.
  • Knowledge of statistical research principles, methods, procedures, and standards.
  • Knowledge of SAS programming and/or other statistical software.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: Using statistical software and other methods to gather, analyze and interpret research data; b) developing, programming, and maintaining complex statistical databases; c) formatting data to develop and prepare reports, charts, tables and other related documents; and d) participating in the development of statistical methodology, study design and data analysis.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
