Summary

Provides professional, operational, and administrative oversight to the various activities of the Law School Student and Career Services Center, to include assisting current UNM law students and alumni by identifying their interests and areas of strengths as attorneys, preparing graduating law students for the bar exam and for job candidacy within the legal sector, providing professional development resources, and providing assistance on student wellness issues, academic grievances, externships, and student organization issues. Manages projects, serves as liaison between the center and potential employers, provides outreach to the community, and represents the center to university and external entities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees and coordinates the day-to-day activities and operations of all programs and projects conducted by the center.
  2. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  3. Develops and implements a creative and integrated portfolio of programs, initiatives, and communications dealing with career planning, resume preparation and professional conduct, job search mentorship and advocacy, and other career services.
  4. Provides leadership, coordination, and facilitation of conferences, seminars, and symposia to promote and support student wellness, academic success, and career services.
  5. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates program effectiveness; effects changes required for improvement.
  6. Provides coaching, guidance, and mentorship to law students and graduates related to learning assessment, bar exam preparation, legal professional development, career opportunities within the legal sector, and other the services offered by the center.
  7. Plans, develops, writes, and coordinates publication of materials and information related to the Center's program and project goals, objectives, activities, and initiatives.
  8. Prepares, coordinates, and maintains appropriate recordkeeping of contracts and/or agreements between law students and external entities such as for externships and clerkships.
  9. Participates in the development of annual budgets, and reports. Presents and justifies all budget requests and/or expenditures to leadership, as required.
  10. Coordinates events and presents lectures and workshops in accordance with the Law School's established goals for student and academic success.
  11. Represents the center to university, state, national, and international entities; acts as liaison with prospective employers.
  12. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of law student services, including student wellness and conduct, externships, moot court/mock trial, and student organizations.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of law school academic success, including tutoring/support, assessment, and bar exam preparation.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of legal career services, including student advising, professional development, recruiting initiatives and outcomes assessment reporting.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs, conferences and/or workshops.
  • Ability to perform comprehensive legal research and analysis based on advanced knowledge and expertise within the field.
  • Ability to oversee financial plans and manage resources.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct multiple programs and activities.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
