Summary

Under general supervision, manages the day-to-day activities of an electronic or mechanical repair, design and/or fabrication shop, to include oversight of a parts and equipment room. Oversees the procurement and management of facilities, equipment, and supplies for the shop, and coordinates administrative activities and contractual arrangements as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees and coordinates all day-to-day operational and support activities of the shop; ensures that work production in the shop meets established objectives, specifications, and standards, and that all applicable operating policies and procedures are adhered to.
  2. Supervises and monitors the work of employees engaged in shop production and production support activities, to include recommendations for hiring, termination, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  3. Implements and maintains inventory control systems and procedures; oversees shipping and receiving of shop supplies and materials.
  4. Analyzes costs of equipment replacements, additions, modifications, and/or upgrades; initiates paperwork for purchases of equipment, supplies, and other materials necessary to maintain shop operations.
  5. Assists in the annual budget planning process and regularly monitors expenditures.
  6. Oversees the functioning and maintenance of shop operating systems, equipment, and facilities, as well as any applicable contractual and/or licensing arrangements.
  7. Provides facilities and technical support for the department's teaching laboratory activities; may provide technical advice and guidance to students on equipment usage, maintenance and safety, as appropriate.
  8. Selects, installs, and calibrates shop tools and equipment, and ensures that all equipment remains operational to specifications.
  9. Expedites and coordinates facilities remodeling, as appropriate; monitors building security and video surveillance, building repairs, and custodial services.
  10. Serves on various technical committees and task forces, as appropriate to the position.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and techniques in area of specialty.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Knowledge of building and assets security principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of building design, construction, and management principles.
  • Knowledge of procurement rules and regulations.
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints and/or technical manuals.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of cost analysis techniques.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to assess operational requirements and to plan and organize work flow patterns and schedules.
  • Knowledge of operating and maintenance principles, procedures, and tolerances in area of technical expertise.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures applicable to shop activities.
  • Ability to install and calibrate specified machinery and/or technical equipment.
  • Knowledge of shipping procedures and documentation.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
