The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Summary

Under direct supervision, provides basic professional level support in routine to moderately complex areas such as systems analysis to implement and support departments and/or the university community with technical solutions as they relate to the academic, research or administrative operations of the department. Resolves routine to moderately complex problems. Serves as technical resource to users/departments in deriving needs assessments, proposals, implementing requests, and solutions. May supervise or provide functional direction to support staff and/or student employees.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Uses discretionary judgement within known parameters to install, maintain, and support basic to moderately complex systems for end users and/or technology stakeholders; analyzes current and proposed departmental/user hardware and software systems.
  2. Assists in the development of and provides individual and/or group instruction and/or training to end users on new or updated technologies; may supervise or provide functional direction to support staff and/or student employees.
  3. Supports small to large scale research and development initiatives and/or projects involving the implementation of new technologies.
  4. Assists in the review, evaluation and recommendation of solutions relating to hardware and software acquisitions and/or network updates; may maintain, and input applicable records such as, but not limited to, network users, security, and tracking inventory levels of equipment and materials.
  5. Gathers facts and data to be used in the review of proposals which consist of objectives, scope, and user expectations.
  6. Analyzes and solves problems of routine complexity on computer applications and systems for students, faculty, and staff for departments and/or the university community; provides a wide range of in-depth technical assistance to departmental users and/or support staff.
  7. Analyzes the need for scripts to automate tasks for departments and/or the university community.
  8. Maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems; participates in professional development activities as appropriate.
  9. May evaluate and test new or modified software programs and software development procedures used to verify that programs function according to user requirements and conform to established guidelines and best practices.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 6 months of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Fundamental knowledge of basic systems analysis.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of relevant computer systems, applications, and/or related equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer security procedures and protocol.
  • Basic knowledge of advanced operating system, network, or application management tasks.
  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of federal copyright laws as they pertain to the use of computer software.
  • Ability to integrate emerging technologies and applications into current environment and to identify technical specifications to meet user needs including operating system and network or application configuration.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position Requires: a) Gathers facts and data to be used in the reviews of proposals which consist of objectives, scope, and user expectation; b) Provides basic professional support of a comprehensive nature; c) Provides support for implementation of new technologies for departments and/or the university community; d) Leads small scope and impact technology projects for departments and/or the university community; and e) Recommends the development of operating system scripts, network, or application management processes to automate tasks for departments and/or the university community.

Conditions of Employment

  • Specialty licensure/certification may be required, as specified by the department.
  • Successful candidate may be subject to a criminal background check prior to starting work.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical effort. May require occasional lifting, handling, pushing, or moving objects up to 50 lbs. Constant standing/walking.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
