Summary

Provides leadership and management in the planning, design, and delivery of business intelligence (BI) initiatives to support data-informed operating, programmatic, and strategic objectives of an integrated, self-contained organizational unit. Exercises a high level of independent judgment in overseeing BI functions, including supervision of professional staff responsible for report development, dashboard design, data governance, and validation to ensure accuracy, integrity, security, and timely access to information. Leads a team in applying advanced BI and analytics methods to deliver actionable insights through ad hoc and recurring reports, dashboards, and visualizations. Serves as a subject matter expert and primary liaison for BI-related initiatives, collaborating with UNM IT, data governance bodies, and institutional stakeholders to align BI work with policy, strategy, and university goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees the design, development, and maintenance of dashboards, reports, presentations, and other visualizations utilizing enterprise business intelligence (BI) tools and services to support operational, programmatic, and strategic decision-making.
  2. Collaborates with stakeholders and unit leadership to translate reporting needs into BI requirements. Identifies and integrates appropriate data sources in coordination with other stakeholders.
  3. Leads development and maintenance of existing and ad hoc reports and dashboards from multiple internal and external data sources. Oversees integrated analytical studies.
  4. Supervises personnel which typically includes day-to-day training, coaching, mentoring and work allocation. Also participates in recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, and problem resolution.
  5. Maintains knowledge of institutional databases and data sources, ensuring alignment of reporting processes with data governance policies, regulations, and guidelines.
  6. Validates data, reports, and visualizations for accuracy, integrity, and conformance with standards. Identifies and resolves reporting issues and data quality concerns.
  7. Oversees documentation of BI processes, data definitions, and reporting logic to support transparency, reproducibility, and compliance. Ensures documentation is complete, accurate, and complies with all applicable regulations and guidelines.
  8. Develops and delivers training to staff and end-users on BI tools, reports, and visualizations as appropriate.
  9. Provides project management for BI development projects supporting operational improvements, process optimization, and strategic initiatives.
  10. Serves as the primary liaison for BI-related initiatives, representing the unit in institutional BI and data governance committees and communities.
  11. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to trends in business intelligence, data visualization, analytics technologies, and higher education practices.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of relational databases, modern data structures, and reporting methods, with the ability to develop solutions for diverse reporting needs.
  • Ability to design, develop, and interpret data visualizations and reports for diverse technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of data governance, data management, and best practices in data integrity and security.
  • Knowledge of enterprise business intelligence tools and data visualization software, ability to develop, maintain, and optimize customized reports and dashboards.
  • Ability to resolve data input, storage, and retrieval problems, collaborating with IT professionals as needed.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages and commercial business intelligence/analytics products.
  • Ability to document business intelligence processes, data definitions, and reporting logic. Ability to analyze operational data requirements and develop corresponding data sources and repositories.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to lead and supervise professional staff engaged in analytics, reporting, and BI solution development.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize projects.
  • Knowledge of current technological developments and trends in BI and analytics.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations, procedures, developing, and implementing new technical strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of data governance practices and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of the operating and business characteristics of a large academic institution using multiple data sources and platforms.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Managing one or more employees responsible for developing analytics and data visualization to support the BI needs of a department or organizational unit; b) Coordinating the analysis and interpretation of user needs and translating requirements into BI solutions; c) Overseeing the design and publication of dashboards, reports, and documentation; d) Providing leadership, training, and collaboration across the institution to ensure effective use of BI resources.
