Summary

Operates and maintains a variety of semiconductor processing, testing and assembly equipment, and utility and safety systems, to assist engineering faculty, staff and students in development, fabrication, and/or modification of electronic circuitry chips, devices, and machinery in research laboratory or cleanroom environment, using knowledge of microelectronic processing equipment, procedures, and specifications. Modifies and installs cleanroom semiconductor process equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Repairs basic to complex circuitry and devices and prepares design documentation, using computer-aided design software applications.
  2. Tests developmental semiconductor devices or sample units and evaluates test equipment to develop data for engineering evaluation of new designs or special studies.
  3. Builds, modifies, and repairs electronic components, using a variety of electromechanical, electronic, vacuum, and mechanical systems associated with semiconductor research laboratories; operates various test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, logic and test probes, and calibrators to verify product conformance to processing specifications.
  4. Performs preventive maintenance, calibration, and repair of utility, process and test equipment; troubleshoots computer interfaces to equipment.
  5. Assists engineering faculty, staff, and students in development of processing and testing techniques and laboratory equipment.
  6. Assists in collection, interpretation, and evaluation of processing and research data and in preparation of related reports.
  7. Facilitates operation and maintenance of cleanroom, ensuring adherence to established standards. Works with vendors and contractors.
  8. Performs technical writing of machine operations, semiconductor processing specifications, and safety protocols within defined parameters.
  9. Supervises lab experiments; as appropriate, supervises other technical personnel; may coordinate the functions of an engineering laboratory.
  10. Maintains an inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment required to maintain a cleanroom and affiliated research laboratory.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associates degree in EET, SMT or MEMS; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Ability to develop a range of electronic circuitry and devices.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to utilize manual and computerized drafting instruments, equipment and softwares.
  • Ability to test and evaluate semiconductor devices and electronic equipment.
  • Ability to use a range of systems and processes to fabricate and/or modify electronic components for semiconductor research.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions.
  • Ability to utilize electronic calibration and testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of microelectronic cleanliness and quality standards.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to published guidelines.
  • Ability to identify and resolve computer/equipment interface problems.
  • Skill in collecting, analyzing, verifying, and manipulating research data.
  • Knowledge of microelectronics testing procedures and laboratory equipment.
  • Technical writing skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Repairs complex circuitry and preparing sketches for design documentation; b) building, modifying and installing cleanroom semiconductor process equipment; c) performing technical writing of machine operations, processing specifications, and safety protocols; d) supervising lab experiments and/or other technical personnel; and e) OSHA High Voltage Certificate.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
