Summary

Under general supervision, sets up and operates standard milling machines, lathes, electric welding machines, sheet metal equipment, woodworking equipment, and other machine tools as directed in the support of research and development activities. Assists in the design and fabrication of fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special scientific needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operates numerically controlled machines, lathes, drills, or other machine tools to fabricate parts.
  2. Builds and/or modifies equipment in accordance to established specifications to meet specific project requirements.
  3. Repairs and/or modifies existing and new scientific equipment in accordance with established specifications and procedures.
  4. Assembles or assists in the assembly of experimental apparatus according to engineering instructions and technical manuals.
  5. Performs basic electric and gas welding operations.
  6. Assists in the maintenance of parts and supply inventory and in the ordering of materials.
  7. Assists in record keeping, to include schematics, mechanical drawings, documentary photographs, and sketches.
  8. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Technical certificate, or equivalent coursework or training in a directly related area; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to operate numerically controlled machines, lathes, drills, and other related equipment to fabricate parts.
  • Ability to perform standard shop computations.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to read schematics, engineering drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to assemble, repair, and modify scientific equipment.
  • Ability to perform basic electrical and gas welding operations.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
