Summary

Provides entry-level assistance in coaching one of a variety of UNM sports programs operating under NCAA Operating Bylaws. Assists with aspects of the program, which may include individual recruitment, training and/or strength conditioning for athletic competition. Receives instruction and developmental guidance from more senior coaching staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists with preparing, and conducting individual and team practices, training, and competition.
  2. Receives guidance and instruction from more senior coaches in general and specific coaching procedures, methods, and techniques.
  3. Assists as directed with the oversight of athletic training, strength, and conditioning workouts; provides technical support and training to athletes, as appropriate to the sport.
  4. Assists as specifically directed, in the recruitment of student-athletes in accordance with NCAA rules.
  5. Assists in monitoring and supporting student-athletes in academic progress.
  6. Assists as appropriate in planning and arranging team travel.
  7. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of applicable team or individual sports and playing rules.
  • Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in area of sporting specialty.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student-athletes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of strengthening and conditioning methods and techniques.

  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required in this position.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Considerable physical activity. May require handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
