Summary

Under general supervision, assists in the monitoring and coordinating of industrial hygiene programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Participates in the development and implementation of university-wide industrial hygiene programs, including Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Lead Hazards, Asbestos and Local Exhaust Ventilation; participates in formulating maintenance strategies and policies.
  2. Advises the university community regarding industrial hygiene protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state and federal agencies; interacts with university departments, faculty, and staff to correct non-compliance issues, including follow-up on correction actions.
  3. Conducts routine and follow-up industrial hygiene surveys of university facilities and departments; prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations.
  4. Utilizes a variety of industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling and analytical equipment and instruments to evaluate chemical and noise exposures; maintains detailed records of sampling activities.
  5. Oversees the development and presentation of industrial hygiene training programs.
  6. Analyzes accident and incident reports for trends; makes recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions.
  7. Responds to emergency situtaions involving hazardous materials; prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations.
  8. Reviews building project plans, including new and remodel projects, for compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
  9. Leads and/or guides the work of lower level safety technicians and/or student employees.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.
  • Ability to design and present informational programs and presentations, based on assessed needs.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to lead and train staff and/or students.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to operate, test and/or repair monitoring, sampling and/or analytical equipment and instruments.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires some heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 60 pounds; physical work is a minor part (less than 30%) of the job.
