Summary

Performs routine propagation, maintenance, and preparation of athletic fields for athletic events, in accordance with defined work guidelines, operating standards, and specific instructions. Works under supervision as a member of an athletic field maintenance team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Mows, trims, and provides related routine turf maintenance to athletic fields.
  2. Marks athletic fields for athletic events.
  3. Operates grounds equipment including mowers, sprayers, aerators, and/or small tractors on athletic fields in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  4. Applies fertilizer and seed to athletic fields.
  5. Performs general maintenance and trash removal tasks on athletic fields, as appropriate.
  6. Performs snow removal, as required.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use of equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to mow and trim athletic turf to acceptable standards.
  • Ability to mark athletic playing surfaces to pre-established quality standards.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to safely handle and operate powered grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of grass seed and fertilizer application procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) performance of routine mowing, trimming, and maintenance of athletic field turf; b) marking of athletic field surfaces in accordance with pre-established guidelines and specific instructions; c) applying standard turf maintenance procedures, including application of seed and fertilizer, to athletic fields; d) safe and effective operation of a range of powered grounds equipment items.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required in this position.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
