The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under limited supervision, plans, coordinates, and supervises all operations of a medical research laboratory. Develops and evaluates new research protocol and techniques; prepares annual and scheduled reports. Performs and oversees direct laboratory research, testing, and statistical analysis, ensuring quality and adherence to accreditation, safety, and environmental regulations. Develops, implements, and administers quality assurance and quality control programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Plans and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the laboratory, including budgeting, program management, staffing, training and supervision, and scheduling.
Develops and evaluates new research methodologies, protocols, and techniques in clinical chemistry, hematology, and/or a variety of related fields.
Develops quality standards and programs; monitors and maintains quality of laboratory operations and performance of laboratory staff in compliance with accreditation standards, safety and environmental regulations, and other applicable requirements.
Performs and oversees direct clinical research as appropriate; performs mathematical and statistical analysis of results; resolves technical research problems.
Provides technical expertise to researchers and may teach and/or train others in research methods and laboratory procedures.
Assists in ordering, care, maintenance, and utilization of department equipment, supplies, and inventories.
Develops, implements, and evaluates quality assurance programs, provides corrective action and documentation, and prepares periodic quality assurance reports.
Maintains and/or oversees maintenance of test equipment and instruments to ensure accuracy and efficient performance.
Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
Knowledge of the principles and procedures of clinical research.
Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures.
Employee development and performance management skills.
Ability to identify and resolve technical research problems.
Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental health standards.
Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
Conditions of Employment
May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
