Summary

Supervises the day-to-day practice support, fiscal, administrative, and compliance activities of a specified outpatient dental clinic operation. Oversees the provision of technical and general clinical support to oral surgeons engaged in clinical activities. Oversees and coordinates the activities of a team of Dental Assistants and/or other clinic support staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees and coordinates all routine, day-to-day practice and administrative support services for multiple outpatient clinical sites
  2. Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  3. Provides and/or oversees provision of pre-and post-anesthetic patient care, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and clinical standards.
  4. Provides and/or oversees provision of technical assistance to oral surgeons in the preparation and administration of local and general anesthetics to patients before and during surgical procedures.
  5. Assists and monitors patients prior to and during sedation, to include assistance with intravenous procedures, monitoring sedation and recovery, and withdrawal of intravenous materials.
  6. Oversees the setup and maintenance of operating rooms for the execution of dental procedures, and provides clinical support to technical staff during the provision of patient care.
  7. Procures and maintains all dental and clinical supplies; administers all supply operations, maintains supply budgets, and tracks expenditure to budget.
  8. Oversees all clinical facilities and resources and ensures clinic compliance with all safety, environmental, and infection control procedures and protocols; coordinates processes related to clinical accreditation and quality management of services.
  9. Develops operating goals and objectives for the unit; implements and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations, as appropriate to the unit.
  10. Develops confidentiality recordkeeping procedures and manages appropriate department records in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and standards.
  11. Coordinates special department activities as appropriate, including in-service workshops and other functions.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure Certified Dental Assistant; dental x-ray certification.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Knowledge and understanding of anesthesia protocol, procedures, techniques, and equipment, as applied to oral surgery.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to make effective administrative/procedural decisions and recommendations.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Working knowledge of the operations and administration of a full-service dental clinic facility.
  • Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  • Knowledge of patient care protocols, procedures, regulations, and standards.
  • Skill in examining and evaluating operations and developing and/or re-engineering operating strategies, systems, and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of intravenous procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of fiscal management principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of dental clinic accreditation, licensure, and quality control regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must maintain certification status.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
