The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Provides direct, routine patient care and related technical and operational support to physicians and/or other patient care providers within a designated area of medical specialty. Performs standard and routine specialty treatment procedures, patient education, and patient instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Schedules patients for procedures as appropriate to the area of medical specialty; coordinates all patient testing and preparatory work needed prior to the application of procedures.
  2. Provides technical assistance in the preparation of patients for procedures and in the setup and preparation of specialized equipment and/or instrumentation.
  3. Provides direct assistance, as specifically requested, to physicians and/or other patient care providers in the performance of standard medical procedures within the designated area of specialty.
  4. Assists with direct patient care procedures and related tasks; checks in patients, assists in obtaining patient histories, takes vital signs, prepares charts, and assists with medical examinations.
  5. Performs routine specialty procedures, such as venipuncture, catheterization, sterile dressing changes, stage I and II wound care, and/or oral suctioning, under established protocols.
  6. Provides standard technical assistance to physicians in the performance of complex, specialized patient treatments.
  7. Reports and records changes in condition and/or behavior of patients or unusual incidents, within scope of training.
  8. Educates and advises patients on specified medical issues within established parameters.
  9. Cleans patient care rooms, equipment and instruments, using sterile procedures; reports facilities and/or equipment problems.
  10. Orders and maintains appropriate stock levels of medical and related supplies.
  11. Transports medical equipment, supplies, and materials as and where needed.
  12. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified which may include practicum. Certification/Licensure Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or equivalent; successful completion of an accredited Nursing Technician course.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of inventory management practices.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical and medical information and provide routine instruction to patients and other non-technical personnel.
  • Patient interviewing, evaluation, and triage skills.
  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
  • Ability to perform standard clinical and patient care procedures according to established protocol.
  • Knowledge of specialized medical/surgical procedures, facilities, instruments, equipment and terminology, as appropriate to the specified area of specialty.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills.
  • Ability to perform routine invasive procedures, such as venipuncture and catheterization, in accordance with established protocols.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and accurately record changes in patient medical condition and behavior.
  • Knowledge of sterile procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
