Summary

Under direct supervision, provides basic emergency rescue and care to the ill and injured, to include assessment of illness and/or injury, management of illness/injury, preparation for transport, transfer of information, and patient care. Typically works on an on-call basis as per schedule or as otherwise required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Attends emergency medical requests as they arise; renders on-site emergency assistance to patients as required.
  2. Performs or assists in the initial assessment and management of illness or injury to emergency patients in accordance with specified protocol and procedure.
  3. Prepares or assists in the preparation of patients for transport, ensuring compliance with emergency medical transport regulations, protocol, and procedure.
  4. Provides or assists in the provision of basic direct patient care, as required in each individual case.
  5. Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
  6. Inspects emergency medical equipment to ensure serviceability and compliance with safety and infection control regulations and standards.
  7. Completes and transfers patient care information and records as per established procedures.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; no previous experience required. Certification/Licensure: NM Licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Basic.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the application of basic on-site emergency medical protocol and procedures.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of the use of emergency medical transport procedures, facilities, and equipment.
  • Ability to perform standardized emergency patient care activities within established protocol.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical equipment maintenance regulations and policy standards.

Conditions of Employment

  • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
