The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Provides and/or assists in the provision of rehabilitative and developmental therapy and support services for ambulatory and/or inpatient clients of a specified patient care facility or clinical program. Facilitates the learning of skills and functions essential to regaining physical or mental capabilities or successfully adjusting to physical and/or mental disabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists in planning, organizes, and conducts occupational therapy programs under the direct guidance of a registered Occupational Therapist.
  2. Treats and/or assists in treatment, advisement, and education of patients and families as appropriate to specific physical, mental, and/or developmental disabilities.
  3. Fabricates and fits splints, braces, and other adaptive devices and trains patients on use, according to therapy program.
  4. Monitors patient progress throughout treatment; prepares and maintains records and reports as appropriate, ensuring adherence to procedural safeguards and confidentiality requirements.
  5. Assists as directed in the training of health care providers in the execution of occupational therapy procedures and techniques.
  6. Requisitions supplies and equipment; cleans and repairs tools and equipment as required.
  7. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 4 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of a range of therapy methods and techniques.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and/or kinesiology.
  • Knowledge occupational therapy theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Ability to effectively communicate diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records.
  • Ability to fabricate and fit a range of adaptive devices for individual patients and to instruct in their use and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy services, facilities and equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Certification as Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) may be an internal requirement for some positions in this classification.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
