Summary

Independently Installs, maintains, and repairs standard to complex lock and key systems, door hardware, and electronic access control hardware.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Interprets Master Keying Guide; uses appropriate discretion and special knowledge of lock systems to preserve the integrity of the university's master key system while meeting customer requests.
  2. Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains both mechanical locking and electronic key card systems.
  3. Installs and repairs door hardware and hydraulic closing fixtures.
  4. Disassembles locks; repairs and replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts.
  5. Installs and/or repairs electronic access control devices.
  6. Installs, services, and/or repairs various types of mechanical locks and security devices, as specifically assigned or instructed.
  7. Cuts new or duplicate keys and stamps with identification.
  8. Issues keys and maintains records of keys issued and returned.
  9. Maintains records of work performed.
  10. May provide individual advice, training, and guidance to lower level specialist staff on specific issues, as appropriate.
  11. Ensures adherence to established University and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.
  12. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  13. Accesses, updates, and maintains Key and Electronic Access database.
  14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL) by Associated Locksmiths of America.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to interpret, implement, and maintain pre-defined master key systems.
  • Knowledge of lock design and functionality.
  • Knowledge of master keying methodology and procedures.
  • Computer skills, to include word processing and database management.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of disc and pin tumbler lock contruction, installation, maintenance, and servicing.
  • Knowledge of master keying terminology, symbols, and diagrams.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair both mechanical locking and electronic access control devices.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Working knowledge of the construction, installation, and maintenance of hydraulic door closing fixtures.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to service and repair cylindrical locks.
  • Ability to read disc tumbler locks.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Understanding of bitting and pin segments.
  • Knowledge of basic life safety and ADA compliance codes for locksmiths.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) interpretation of the University master keying guide; b) independent installation, troubleshooting and servicing of advanced key card systems and other electronic access control devices.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must obtain manufacturer's certification as a qualified card-swipe or proximity access control hardware technician within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
