Summary

Assists senior Metal Technicians in metal fabrication and/or welding work. Performs rudimentary shop tasks without direct supervision, including torch cutting, brazing, sheet metal bending, and mechanical cutting and fabrication of signs and frames.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists sheet metal or welding technicians with layout, fabrication, and installation of projects.
  2. Prepares work sites for welding or sheet metal installations.
  3. Installs fabricated duct work and other metal assemblies.
  4. Transports materials for sheet metal and/or welding projects.
  5. Constructs metal assemblies as directed by senior Metals Technicians.
  6. Measures and cuts metal stock and sheet metal.
  7. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to follow verbal and/or written technical instructions.
  • Sheet metalworking skills at a level equivalent to 600 contact hours in a sheet metal apprenticeship program.
  • Ability to retrieve field information, such as dimensions and angles, without supervision.
  • Ability to interpret and follow sketches and patterns for cutting and fabricating.
  • Knowledge of accounting for job labor and material costs.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  • Ability to perform inspections and make necessary adjustments to conform to job specifications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Assisting sheet metal or welding technicians with layout, fabrication and installation; b) transporting materials for projects; c) measuring and cutting stock and sheet metal; and d) preparing work sites for welding or sheet metal installations.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
