Summary

Oversees the maintenance and upkeep of the Harding Mine, ensuring a safe and pleasant experience for visitors to the mine. Maintains access road, sets up signs as needed, obtains visitor liability releases, and assists visitors as they tour the mine.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Manages the day-to-day operations of the Harding Mine.
  2. Maintains access road, places signs as required, and ensures safety of the mine area.
  3. Conducts tours for visitors and provides information on the mine's history; assists visitors in identifying local minerals.
  4. Obtains visitor liability releases and maintains sign-in logs.
  5. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of light and heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Knowledge of mineral identification.
  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Receptionist skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
