Summary

Assists with automotive and small engine repairs as outlined by supervisory staff. May wash vehicles and perform basic maintenance. Performs vehicle/parts delivery and shop cleanup as appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists technicians in the repair of automobiles and other vehicles and/or small engines.
  2. Picks up and delivers stranded fleet vehicles and vehicles sent out for repair.
  3. Picks up and delivers parts for the automotive and small engine shops, as needed.
  4. Details vehicles, both interior and exterior, as required.
  5. Assists in the provision of customer service through the use of appropriate written and verbal communication skills in the handling of work orders, delivery documents, and check-in forms.
  6. May perform basic repairs and maintenance such as flat tire repair, oil changes, vehicle lubrication, or other duties as specifically assigned by mechanics or supervisors.
  7. Performs shop maintenance and clean-up.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Less than high school; no previous experience required.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Basic knowledge of automotive and/or small engine repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Ability to drive motor vehicles.
  • Ability to receive and/or deliver automotive parts.
  • Ability to perform both interior and exterior auto detailing.
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Knowledge of shop maintenance and clean-up procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
