Summary

Oversees, coordinates, and administers the operational activities and administrative aspects of the UNM Recycling Department. Supervises the daily activities of support staff. Must be able to occasionally work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  2. Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  3. Makes appropriate changes to the department work schedule in response to customer location changes or business requirements and Recycling department staffing levels.
  4. Develops and implements operating goals and objectives for the unit; develops, implements and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations.
  5. Collects operational information and maintains database used to prepare the annual New Mexico Solid Waste Facility Report as required by New Mexico Solid Waste regulations. Maintains the Recycling Listserv.
  6. Assists in the annual budget planning process; monitors all departmental purchases and performs monthly purchase reconciliation.
  7. Monitors training requirements/records and ensures all training or refresher training requirements are completed on time as required by OSHA regulations or NM Solid Waste regulations.
  8. Develops and implements detailed Recycling projects on and off campus.
  9. Develops usage/safety procedures for any new equipment according to OSHA regulations; maintains and updates Recycling SDS files according to OSHA regulations.
  10. Supports campus groups involved in recycling, sustainability or charity activities. Make outreach presentations as required. Participates in Sustainability Council activities and represents Recycling to the Council.
  11. Represents the University of New Mexico to the New Mexico Recycling Coalition and participates in NMRC activities.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and techniques in area of specialty.
  • Skill in examining and evaluating operations and procedures, formulating policy and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and credit check.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License is a requirement for this job.
  • Must obtain a New Mexico Recycling Facility Operator Certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Requires extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
