Summary

Directs and manages the strategic marketing and communications functions of the University of New Mexico, including branding, strategic planning, social media strategies, media/public relations and critical events strategies. Integrates the University's communications, media/public relations, and marketing programs and initiatives into a cohesive effort that conveys a consistent message in support of its mission, strategic goals, and objectives. Serves as the University's senior strategic advisor with respect to communications, media and public relations, and marketing initiatives. Serves as a member of the Presidents executive cabinet, and reports directly to the President.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Initiates and oversees the establishment of integrated strategies, plans, and programs designed to ensure that all institutional communication, marketing, and media/public relations efforts are cohesive, consistent, and effective in supporting the mission and advancement goals of the University.
  2. Oversees the creation and execution of comprehensive institutional communications programs and initiatives, ensuring consistency of institutional message with the University's mission, objectives, and strategic plan.
  3. Oversees and integrates the strategic approach of the various communication programs of the University, including media relations, community relations, institutional publications and executive communications.
  4. Establishes institutional marketing objectives, plans, and strategies, and provides guidance and oversight to the University's various marketing efforts; provides integrative leadership to ensure that individual programs support the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the University.
  5. Formulates and presents a strategic communications plan for the University to senior leadership.
  6. Advises senior University leaders in their efforts to translate and communicate their accomplishments to the University community and various external audiences.
  7. Serves as a source of expertise and support to constituencies across the University in the development and implementation of outreach communication and marketing strategies and plans. Incorporate new technologies as they emerge to fully communicate the University's messages.
  8. Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff.
  9. Represents the University to various institutional divisions as well as externally to governmental agencies, vendors, students and their parents, and/or the general public.
  10. Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
  11. Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.
  12. Recommends and participates in the development of University policies and procedures; may serve on University planning and policy-making committees.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree; at least 10 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
