Summary

Under limited supervision, oversees and coordinates the business operations of the Tamarind Institute Gallery. to include management of all aspects of the marketing of the lithographs created at the Institute. Develops, implements, and evaluates marketing strategies and plans, and recommends changes in marketing approaches and policies as appropriate to the business interests of the Institute.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conducts market research activities to identify targeted populations, including individual collectors, museum collections, and gallery representation.
  2. Prepares marketing proposals and program evaluation reports.
  3. Develops and expands market by initiating new contacts and maintaining communication with current clients.
  4. Plans, develops and organizes promotional activities including participation in art fairs, advertising, and printed materials.
  5. Identifies potential publishing projects.
  6. Designs, writes, and oversees the production of printed promotional and educational materials including advertisements, catalogues, brochures, flyers, and articles for publication.
  7. Represents the organization at various community, national, and international events to promote Tamarind programs.
  8. Presents public programs or lectures and conducts facility tours; assists gallery clients.
  9. Manages exhibit space in on-site gallery and at art fairs/conferences.
  10. Develops and manages or assists with the development and management of annual operating budget(s).
  11. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  12. Oversees all gallery functions including, but not limited to, the management and administration of specialized databases, photo files, sales records, and exhibition details; contact with artists; establishing sales prices in consultation with artist and Director, and response to inquiries regarding all aspects of Tamarind programs.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art, art history, and the contemporary art marketplace.
  • Knowledge of art marketing principles, strategies and techniques.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques.
  • Knowledge of commercial printing procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of fine art printmaking processes.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate activities and special events.
  • Knowledge of computer software programs.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Considerable physical activity. May require handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
