The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under general supervision, plans, oversees and coordinates the generation of operating revenue through the selling and marketing of advertising space and the production of all advertising appearing in the Daily Lobo, the university's daily student newspaper. Identifies, develops, and serves as primary point of representation to potential and existing advertising clientele.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans, recruits, trains, coordinates, and supervises a student advertising sales staff to generate budgeted revenue for the department.
  2. Plans and develops strategies to market the Daily Lobo to potential advertisers on a local, regional, and national basis.
  3. Oversees and coordinates an advertising and production staff responsible for all phases of ad production; oversees daily advertising print production, and resolves printing, operational, and equipment problems and failures.
  4. Responds to inquiries and researches and resolves problems related to transactions handled by the unit; serves as liaison with other constituencies in the resolution of day-to-day administrative and operational issues.
  5. Develops or assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient and safe operation of the unit.
  6. Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  7. Interacts and serves as liaison with advertising clients; issues adjustments to clients, and plans and carries out sales development and public relations activities, as appropriate.
  8. Represents the organization at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to recruit, train, lead, and supervise students.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of newspaper advertising principles, procedures, regulations, and standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Knowledge of the college newspaper advertising market.
  • Knowledge of marketing strategies, processes, and available resources.
  • Knowledge of newspaper advertising production principles, methods, techniques, procedures, facilities, and equipment.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to assess operational requirements and to plan and organize work flow patterns and schedules.
  • Skill in the use of computerized page layout and design software.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Supervising a student advertising sales staff; b) developing strategies to market the Daily Lobo to potential advertisers; c) resolving printing, operational and equipment problems; and d) oversees all phases of advertising and production for the Daily Lobo.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
