The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under general supervision, coordinates the development, production, and distribution of one or more comprehensive technical publications and/or manuals for a specified organizational entity of the University. Writes, reviews, and edits copy drafts and/or researches, analyzes, and verifies copy with authors as appropriate. Develops, manages, and maintains a related technical web site, as appropriate. May supervise, instruct, and/or assign work to administrative support staff and/or student employees, as appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Researches and compiles and/or develops discussion drafts for publications as appropriate; presents drafts to various relevant constituencies and/or other interested parties for review and consultation.
  2. Gathers, analyzes, and evaluates input from the constituent community pertaining to recommended additions, deletions, modifications, or clarifications to proposed and/or existing publication materials and drafts.
  3. Compiles, edits, and prepares final text for publication; plans layout, arranges sequence of topics, and coordinates preparation and placement of graphics as appropriate.
  4. Develops or assists in development and management of publication budgets, and regularly monitors expenditures; may participate in the negotiation and management of publishing contracts.
  5. As appropriate to the position, manages and maintains a comprehensive web site pertaining to the publication(s); coordinates, integrates, and manages information contributed to the web site, and establishes template formats and logical structure for web pages.
  6. Coordinates associated activities, such as production of documents, scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, and maintaining files.
  7. Participates in operational planning and in the development and administration of operating policies and procedures, as appropriate.
  8. May coordinate and oversee the activities of support staff and/or students on a project or as-needs basis.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to evaluate and edit the content, structure, and format of a range of written material.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to develop and prepare manuscript copy for printing and/or reproduction.
  • Skill in developing policy and procedure documentation.
  • Knowledge of html, web page creation, and web site maintenance.
  • Research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) research and compilation of technical information for drafts and/or manuscripts; b) review, analysis, and evaluation of complex technical drafts for content and format; c) writing and editing of technical material; d) interaction and negotiation with a wide range of constituencies in the development and preparation of technical publications; e) development and administration of a multi-page web site; f) layout and preparation of written materials for publication; g) budget management of projects.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
