Summary

Under indirect supervision, selects, develops, edits, and writes highly specialized technical or foreign language material for publication including books, journals, and manuscripts. Ensures that all materials meet established standards of appearance and content.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Edits articles, journals, technical reports and papers, and related documents involving highly specialized, scientific, and/or non-English language; prepares copy for final production.
  2. Edits and produces camera-ready copy of printed materials for publication including books, manuscripts, articles, and papers.
  3. Oversees production schedules to ensure completion by set deadlines.
  4. Performs research in order to accurately edit, prepare, and produce technical documentation; maintains appropriate databases and/or files.
  5. Formats and produces complex computer-generated forms, tables, and graphs; instructs others on formatting and design methods.
  6. Serves as a liaison between the unit and authors, printers, and/or publishers; as appropriate to the position, locates peer reviewers and mediates between peer reviewer and author.
  7. Produces technical and scientific illustrations for presentations and/or publication, as appropriate to the requirements of the position.
  8. May maintain databases and files including those used to track subscriptions and mailing lists.
  9. May type and format technical and non-technical documents such as grant proposals, manuscripts, articles, course descriptions, reports, and correspondence.
  10. May answer the telephone and perform routine clerical tasks.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.
  • Skill in developing design and layout of materials to be published.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Database management skills.
  • Ability to evaluate and edit the content, structure, and format of a range of written material.
  • Ability to process computer data and to format and generate reports.
  • Ability to develop and prepare manuscript copy for printing and/or reproduction.
  • Skill in graphic design.
  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.
  • Mediation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skill in the use of library resources.
  • Ability to analyze graphic and technical information and create interpretive illustrations.
  • Budget development and management skills as related to the production of new digital or traditional media communications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Editing material involving translation of non-English language or highly specialized technical material; b) performing research in order to accurately edit and produce documentation; c) editing and producing camera-ready copy for publication; and d) producing highly technical and scientific illustrations for publications.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
