Summary

Collects and analyzes information, conducts interviews, and attends events to write, voice and edit stories about newsworthy topics for broadcast and online publication.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to pitch original and timely news stories. Produces and delivers content for broadcast, web, and social media.
  2. Gathers and verifies factual information regarding news stories through interviews, observation, and research.
  3. Builds relationships with sources including public officials, administrators, researchers, organizers, public information officers, and other newsmakers.
  4. Organizes material, determines framing, and writes features, two-ways, spots, and cut-and-copies according to departmental editorial style and format standards.
  5. Records and edits field and in-studio audio, mixes and files pre-recorded broadcast-ready features, two-ways, and spots.
  6. Takes photographs or shoots video to illustrate stories. Creates digital and social media posts.
  7. Delivers live reports from the site of an event, mobile broadcast unit, or in-studio as appropriate.
  8. Participates in fundraising broadcasts and/or events.
  9. May host, produce, interview guests, and/or screen phone calls for KUNM's call-in show, Let's Talk New Mexico.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Successful completion of at least 60 college-level credit hours; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to write and produce broadcast-quality audio and digital news stories.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining accuracy.
  • Knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics, standards, and techniques.
  • Familiarity with audio storytelling and audio editing.
  • Ability to accurately determine newsworthiness.
  • Skill in the use of journalistic research, methods, and techniques.
  • Analytical, investigative, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Conditions of Employment

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
