The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under direct supervision, performs a variety of administrative and/or clerical functions relating to public relations activities, including marketing, fundraising, media relations, advertising, writing, editing, and producing, and coordinating the production of routine copy for publication.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assists in planning and coordinating promotional special events including open houses, book signings, fundraisers, outreach and community events, tours, press conferences, banquets, exhibits, career fairs, and athletic events.
Provides information to visitors and/or other interested parties, and provides routine external liaison in one or more of a range of contexts, such as coordinating visitor center operations, or staffing special campus and/or media events.
Maintains database records and files including mailing and contributor or donor lists and publication distribution information.
Writes and edits public relations materials including news releases, articles, and newsletters.
Provides clerical and/or accounting support to the unit, as appropriate to the position, including typing and data entry of contributions and billings; receives, records, deposits, and tracks revenues.
Assists in writing, designing, and overseeing the production of promotional printed materials including catalogs, brochures, and flyers.
May coordinate communications with the media (for example, by developing a list of experts within the university community to respond to media inquiries); may schedule university faculty and staff as speakers for community groups.
May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
May represent the department at business and community meetings; may conduct tours and/or give presentations.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to perform simple accounting procedures.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Knowledge of cash management principles and/or procedures.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Database management skills.
Ability to develop and prepare manuscript copy for printing and/or reproduction.
Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events.
Computer data entry skills.
Position requires: a) Providing information to internal and external sources; b) writing and editing routine public relations materials; c) assisting in the production of promtional printed materials; and d) serving as external liaision in routine area such as visitor center operations or media events.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
No or very limited physical effort required.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
