Summary

Directs the local programming and contract productions for either the University's radio station, KUNM, or television station, KNME.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Participates in development, implementation and maintenance of policies, objectives, short-and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goals.
  2. Supervises and trains department personnel, including students, interns, and volunteers.
  3. Reads and distributes public radio messages that are received from the Public Broadcast Service Digital Access Computer System.
  4. Produces underwriter, public service, and station promotional messages for broadcast.
  5. Engineers studio broadcasts and recordings, including live call-ins and interviews.
  6. Records and supervises the recording of satellite feeds.
  7. Participates in the development of annual operating budgets and provides fiscal direction to the unit.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to develop and supervise volunteers.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to program and conduct on-air broadcasts.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Knowledge of FCC and other federal, state and local broadcasting regulations.
  • Ability to create and produce broadcast messages.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of broadcast engineering techniques, procedures, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of on-air and online techniques/procedures, protocols, and standards.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation, cost estimating, monitoring, and fiscal management principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of satellite broadcasting procedures and protocols.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment with field assignments on location at events around New Mexico.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of equipment that can weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
