Summary

Manages or co-manages all production, staging, and related activities associated with the execution of all performances and events held in a major campus theatrical or media venue. Oversees the event operation of all stage equipment and support spaces and the supervision of event stage crews. Serves as on-site production representative during events.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees the staging of all public events, including the operation of theatrical lighting, sound, video, and other equipment and assets relating to performance and support areas; readies stages and support facilities for specified use.
  2. Serves as on-site production manager, advising and assisting users with staging techniques, budgeting, and event planning; supervises and manages the stage, support, and shop areas.
  3. Trains and supervises all event stage crew personnel in technical and safety procedures for theater, equipment, and personnel.
  4. Maintains an inventory of materials and equipment needed for the operation of performance spaces; creates and implements a program of preventive maintenance, making or contracting for repairs as directed.
  5. May provide billing information to department and rental clients; may maintain contracts with rental clients, as appropriate.
  6. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  7. Develops or assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient and safe operation of the unit.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform repairs to audio and video equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Knowledge of theater and/or events staging, sound and lighting and/or costume design procedures, techniques and facilities as appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Program planning and implementation skills.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of theatrical lighting techniques and equipment.
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Knowledge of cost analysis techniques.
  • Ability to coordinate the maintenance and repair of facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
