Summary

Under limited supervision, directs and oversees the design of all printed and digital materials pertaining to and produced by the unit. Provides a strong supervisory and management role for the unit's design staff, plans and manages complex design solutions, and creates design layouts for books and other printed materials. Responsible for understanding how current visual standards are implemented in a variety of domestic and global publishing markets.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes work allocation, training, promotion and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  2. Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with university, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  3. Manages the unit's design-related projects including but not limited to books, digital products, marketing materials, web-site design, print and web advertising, and logo design.
  4. Formulates basic layout design or presentation approach, and specifies material details, such as style and size, photographs, graphics, animation, etc.
  5. Provides and/or coordinates the provision of technical guidance, consultation, related support to clientele within area of program focus; provides day-to-day problem solving as necessary on day-to-day program-related needs and issues.
  6. Participates in the development of operating goals and objectives for the unit; recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operations, as appropriate to the unit.
  7. Establishes the conceptual and stylistic direction for design staff and oversees their work. Reviews and approves designs, artwork, photographs, or graphics developed by staff members. Ensures that illustrative material conforms to standards and specifications.
  8. Oversees the design department budget including the development of requests for quotations for the domestic and overseas production of books, negotiates fees for art and illustrations, selects outside vendors, and secures permissions.
  9. Coordinates with various program stakeholders to secure schedules and manages quality control and the timely delivery of books to the warehouse.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Skill in design-related computer software programs and digital applications.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
