Summary

Directs and manages major, integrated research programs within a broadly defined or unusually advanced area of health sciences research. Participates in the establishment of overall study parameters, defines investigational topics, and establishes research concepts, methods, and procedures. Authors and/or co-authors integrated study reports, presentations, and manuscripts. Directs and oversees project fiscal and human resources administration.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Interprets, organizes, executes, and manages integrated research programs of unusual breadth, scope, complexity, and/or potential impact on the University's scientific standing in the community.
  2. Utilizes highly advanced and unique knowledge of subject matter, along with broad knowledge of scientific methods to explore and define scope and focus of problems for investigation.
  3. Develops advanced research model concepts, and oversees the establishment of integrated study methods, protocols, and procedures.
  4. Leads and/or directly participates in the development and authoring of study reports, presentations, and manuscripts based on original research.
  5. Oversees and coordinates the day-to-day activities of technical and support staff, to include work allocation, training, and problem resolution; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  6. Participates in the identification and development of research funding sources, as appropriate, and oversees project administration, to include fiscal management.
  7. Serves as a member of adjunct faculty, as appropriate, in accordance with the provisions of a letter of academic title.
  8. Serves in the capacity of designated principal or co-principal investigator on specified research assignments, as appropriate to overall study objectives.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Doctorate degree; at least 5 years of post-doctorate experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to resolve conflict and to manage personnel and resources.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of scientific method.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of a key area of scientific study.
  • Ability to provide independent professional leadership in the development of research model concepts and in the establishment of research methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Administrative planning skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.

Conditions of Employment

  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work may, on occasion, involve exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. May require physical effort including lifting up to 25 pounds and some extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Work may on occasion involve exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that may require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
