Summary

Develops and delivers instruction for advanced Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Academy educational offerings; leads and/or participates in program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Leads and/or participates in related research and projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Participates in and/or provides technical leadership in the planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of EMS educational program offerings.
  2. Prepares and delivers instruction either at the EMS Academy or off-site, as needed; supervises the activities of course participants during instructional time.
  3. Evaluates learner performance, provides feedback, and develops learner remediation plans.
  4. Participates in research activities related to topics impacting emergency medical services care and education.
  5. Fulfills EMS educational program administrative requirements, to include calculation and submission of grades, maintenance of program, course, and student/participant records, and preparation and submission of data and reports.
  6. Collaborates with co-workers, peers, and others to develop innovative programs designed to meet the needs of the EMS community and EMS providers.
  7. Provides day-to-day technical guidance and training to lower level staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work, as appropriate to operational needs; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers.
  8. Participates in continuing professional development programs as appropriate.
  9. Adheres to established University and departmental policies and procedures and relevant quality and safety standards.
  10. Participates in activities that promote the EMS Academy, to include student recruiting, and program marketing events, as appropriate.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of directly related EMS experience, to include at least 2 years as an EMS educator. Certification/Licensure NM licensure as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Paramedic.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Knowledge of EMS theory, practice, and trends.
  • Knowledge of current EMS curricular content and education standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to adapt EMS curricula to reflect State requirements, local needs, and national trends.
  • Knowledge of the delivery of emergency medical services in the State of New Mexico
  • Ability to evaluate, design, and implement curriculum, testing, and/or teaching methodologies.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
  • Ability to practice at an EMT level appropriate to the level of instruction being provided, from Basic to Paramedic.
  • Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Knowledge of competency-based education principles and methods.
  • Ability to contribute to research programs in area of expertise.
  • Ability to assess student performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback.
  • Ability to promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among educational participants.
  • Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality.
  • Ability to maintain complete, accurate educational records.
  • Knowledge of EMS educational program accreditation processes and standards.
  • Knowledge of State of New Mexico EMS Bureau rules and regulations.
  • Ability to successfully interact with a diverse population of students and EMS Academy customers regarding a variety of issues.
  • Knowledge of information and products that enhance the planning, delivery, coordination, and evaluation of EMS education.
  • Ability to provide technical and programmatic leadership within area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of current and developing issues and trends in area of expertise.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) independent planning, delivery, and evaluation of EMS education curricula and practical instruction at the Paramedic level; b) participation in EMS educational and/or services research; c) collaboration in the development of new and innovative educational programs; d) provision of technical guidance and mentorship to lower level staff e) interpretation of and response to the needs of EMS provider agencies at the Paramedic level.

Conditions of Employment

  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Must obtain ACLS, PHTLS, and PALS Certification within 12 months of date of hire.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Work may involve some exposure to operating circumstances that require following standard or prescribed safety precautions.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
