The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Performs or assists with a variety of day-to-day technical, operational, and administrative support activities for a major, full-service Branch academic library. Provides routine assistance in the performance of tasks such as circulation of materials, reference services, copy cataloging, bibliographic services, under the guidance of more senior staff. Performs other general customer service and administrative support activities for the library as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides guidance and assistance to patrons regarding general and specific information about the library and library resources.
Performs routine library technical customer service activities, to include reference services and assistance with bibiographic searches.
Receives and processes incoming bibliographic materials; creates and maintains bibliographic source records as appropriate.
Performs and/or assists with ILL and/or copy cataloging, as appropriate.
Coordinates the circulation of library materials.
Oversees designated library operational activies as assigned, to include circulation operations during normal working hours and/or evening/weekend library operations.
Oversees and coordinates the activities of student employees performing routine library or associated administrative support operations, as appropriate to the position.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
Strong working knowledge of the day-to-day technical and operational requirements of a full-service academic library.
Skill in the use of relevant automated library systems.
Ability to interpret and evaluate client informational needs and to determine appropriate alternative solutions.
Database and records management and/or maintenance skills.
Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Knowledge of library principles, practices, and terminology.
Strong customer service orientation.
Conditions of Employment
This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the USUNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
Light physical effort; requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 lbs or some standing and/or walking.
