Summary

Establishes and manages integrated training and development strategies and programs for practice physicians and Medical Coders employed by the UNM Medical Group. Develops and implements strategic needs analyses and training plans for the organization; coordinates and evaluates curriculum development, and conducts the preparation and delivery of training. Oversees all program development, fiscal management, and administrative aspects of the activity, to include development, technical coordination, and management of internal and/or external professional training and development and support staff. Provides guidance and leadership to coding and billing management in the implementation and administration of effective systems, processes, and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides consultation, leadership, and expertise to internal management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of coding education.
  2. Assesses the educational needs of coding staff, management, and physicians and develops programs or researches educational resources to meet those needs.
  3. Develops all training materials and coding aids for both formal training and use by coders in daily work.
  4. Identifies and evaluates innovative educational methodology that may be appropriate for the targeted audience; incorporates new methodology as appropriate to enhance and update the effectiveness of education and skills development programs.
  5. Actively works on site at the clinics conducting specialized training in coding and related billing issues; helps identify and document appropriate codes and procedures for billing, as appropriate.
  6. Serves as a technical resource for all involved personnel; ensures that information is accurate and current, meeting professional coding standards.
  7. Oversees and coordinates the certification program for coding staff; makes recommendations for credentialing and certification.
  8. Develops and implements a comprehensive educational plan for all clinical specialty coding.
  9. Participates in the hiring process and educational planning for coding staff.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of CPC training; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure CPC (Certified Professional Coder).
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic, responsive training and development plans and programs.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and preparation procedures.
  • Ability to design, develop, implement, and evaluate training plans, curricula, and methodology.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with professional coding societies and resources.
  • Strong oral communication skills and the ability to deliver presentations to large groups.
  • Experience working in an academic medical center.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.

Conditions of Employment

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
