Summary

Under general direction, organizes and coordinates assigned programs and services that facilitate a supportive institutional approach to develop the whole student across the UNM student population. Supports the strategic direction for the Dean of Student's Office programs. Makes recommendations on related policies, procedures, and system improvements. Works in collaboration with students, academic units, student affairs, and community partners. Assigned programs and services include a wide range of services designed to support myriad student needs within a diverse student population.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Directs, plans, coordinates, and oversees assigned programs and services within the Division of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students Office.
  2. Assists in establishing and implementing goals, budgets, and operating procedures for Dean of Students Office functions.
  3. Recommends and participates in the development of university policies to ensure compliance and improve a student's ability to navigate university rules and expectations.
  4. Performs department/program assessments and evaluations to determine effectiveness, and implements corrective action as required for improvement.
  5. Oversees experience surveys and evaluations for students who use the Dean of Students Office resources and compile data to improve services.
  6. Provides consultation and training regarding services, access, and care of students in crisis; oversees and issue referrals; ensure continuity of care.
  7. Assists in designing and maintaining staffing and an organizational structure to effectively accomplish the department function; recruits, employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates department staff.
  8. Researches, plans, implements, and assesses student development efforts with all elements of the university community and all facets of campus life.
  9. Represents the Dean of Students Office to various institutional divisions, committees, students and their parents, and/or the general public.
  10. Manages emergency and crisis situations that pertain to students and campus life; serves in an on-call capacity.
  11. Oversees and implements training initiatives for prevention, student support, and best practices for the University on student-related issues.
  12. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that is above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies, and trends within specialty areas
  • Ability to assess and evaluate program areas to better organize resources and build strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated crisis intervention skills and ability to assess individual crisis situations and determine next steps.

  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
