Summary

Provides academic and financial aid/scholarship advisement services to targeted student populations. Plans, develops, and implements community outreach activities and campus recruitment and retention programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Answers student inquiries and resolves problems related to curriculum and course prerequisites, referring to catalogues, written course descriptions, and other appropriate sources.
  2. Coordinates with other organizational units to process admission and graduation requests and to aid in resolution of academic problems.
  3. Prepares form letters, individual letters, and information packets in support of group and/or individual recruitment efforts; attends and participates in individual and group orientation and other information dissemination sessions.
  4. Plans, develops, and implements community outreach activities for underrepresented student populations.
  5. Conducts recruitment activities for targeted student populations.
  6. Coordinates retention activities including student mentor programs, tutor services, personal counseling, and study skills workshops; plans, develops, and coordinates special events.
  7. May develop and implement services that ensure reasonable accommodations are made for students with disabilities.
  8. May assist and/or prepare grant proposals to fund student programs and services.
  9. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associate's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of community outreach practices.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to develop and implement recruitment plans.
  • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues.
  • Ability to plan community outreach projects.
  • Knowledge of a range of recruitment strategies and techniques.
  • Knowledge of targeted recruitment principles, procedures, and resources.
  • Ability to analyze course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements.
  • Knowledge of student outreach services and activities.
  • Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events.
  • Ability to design and develop recruitment plans.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) Providing academic and financial aid/scholarship advisement to targeted populations; b) coordinating with other units to process admission and graduation requests; c) aiding in the resolution of academic problems; d) planning, developing and coordinating community outreach activities; and e) coordinating retention activities and skills workshops.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the USUNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
