The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under direct supervision, reviews and grades essays written by applicants for a specified advanced degree program, as an integral part of evaluation for admission into that program. Typically works on an occasional/on-call basis.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Reviews written essays and/or excercises for content, organization, grammar, and spelling.
  2. Assigns grades to essays and/or written excercises in accordance with pre-established principles, criteria, standards, and procedures.
  3. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Creative writing skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax.
  • Knowledge of teaching principles and practices, as related to tertiary students.
  • Skill in reviewing and assessing written composition.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods, and procedures for assigning grades to written essays/exercises for content.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
